Day 3 Progress
Today I assembled the side table, using clamps and pocket screws. I constructed the outer frame first, connecting one side piece to the bottom, clamping each side so that the pieces edges were flush against each other. To help make the edges flush, I also used a mallet to hit the pieces to the exact placement I desired. Using a screw gun, I fastened the pieces together inside the pocket holes I created. Next I fastened the other side pieces of the outer frame using the same technique, then the top piece as well. For the inner frame, I constructed a "c" shape with the top and bottom pieces and side piece, using the same pocket screws and clamps, and then attached it to the outer frame too. I ran into an issue however, in that the unit hung a little lower in the middle of the piece that it did at the side it was attached to the outer frame with, by 1/4" precisely. To fix this unevenness, I decided to create a back support by using a pieces that was exactly 6 1/2" ( the lengths from the bottom of the piece to the bottom of the inner unit) x 20" to be wedged between the outer frame and the inner unit to lift it up slightly and support it. This fixed the problem I had encountered, and did not change the aesthetic of the piece much!
