Final Project Day 1
Day one was focused on building the Sketchup model. Since I was following a hand drawing I had already made, the process was going very smoothly. Then I got to the shelves. Originally, I had calculated that there should be 18 shelves each 1 1/2" apart, but when I drew the model, it ended up with 19 shelves and less than 1 1/2" between the last shelf and the bottom. So for the next thirty minutes to an hour, I calculated and recalculated ways to organize the shelves. Why was this such a big deal? Why couldn't I have just have 19 shelves and a slightly small shelf at the top or bottom? Because I had asked for 3 sheets of plywood (which Tim had already picked up) giving me 18 shelves. If I were to purchase one more sheet, I would be wasting a bunch of plywood! So, I finally figured out that I could increase the slot of the dado from 1/4" to 5/16". It mostly fixed the problem but one of the shelves would be a little small. Oh well, they slide in and out. With the problem solved, everything else was finished quickly. Pictures of the model are posted below.
